This article includes a detailed guide on how to enable Google Ads Audience protection

Updated yesterday

This guide walks you through setting up Google Ads Audience Protection with Lunio.

Before You Start

To enable Google Ads Audience Protection, ensure the following prerequisites are met:

  • Lunio Multiplatform Tracking Script Installed: Your website must have the Lunio multiplatform tracking script integrated. You can follow the installation guide here.

  • Supported Tracking Parameter: Lunio requires a supported tracking parameter to determine traffic sources, check whether your current tracking meets requirements here.

  • Google Platform Created in Your Workspace: You need to have created a Google Platform within your Lunio workspace. You can follow the setup guide here.

Creating Your Conversion Action

  1. In your Google Ads account, navigate to Goals > Conversions > Summary > New Conversion Action.

  2. Select ‘Conversions on a website’ and enter your website URL. If your Google Ads Tag is not pre-populated, the set up process may instruct you to scan your website to find your existing Google Ads tag.

  3. Choose a category for your Lunio conversion action. We recommend selecting ‘Page view’, which can be adjusted to a custom category later.

  4. Click ‘Set up’ next to your new conversion event.

  5. Select ‘Create a manual event’ and name it ‘Lunio Invalid User’ or another easily recognizable label.

  6. Click ‘Settings’ next to your newly created event and modify the following:

    • Action optimization: Set to ‘Secondary action’

    • Value: Choose ‘Don’t use a value’

    • Attribution: Set to ‘Last click’

Your event should look as below:

  7. Proceed to the next step in the setup wizard. Select ‘Set up with a Google Tag’ and click ‘See event snippet’.

  8. Copy the generated tag and add the ID from the ‘send_to’ field to your Google platform configuration within Lunio. Alternatively, our support team will be happy to help you configure this. Example code below:

Creating Your Audience

We now need to create an audience of invalid users based on the newly created conversion action.

  1. Navigate to Tools > Shared Library > Audience Manager > Segments > Your data segments.

  2. Click the blue ‘+’ icon in the top left and select ‘+Website Visitors’.

  3. Fill out the audience segment details as follows:

    • Segment Name: Lunio Invalid Users

    • Segment Members: Visitors of a page with specific tags → Lunio Invalid Users

    • Membership Duration: We recommend 540 days as standard.

    • Description: Invalid users detected by Lunio.

  4. Note that after activating the tag for the first time, there is a 24-hour waiting period before it starts collecting data. Exclusions will take effect once your audience reaches a minimum of 1,000 users.

Applying the Audience to Your Campaigns

To protect your campaigns from invalid users, apply the audience as an exclusion:

  1. Open the campaigns you want to protect.

  2. Select ‘Audiences’ on the left under Audiences, Keywords, and Content.

  3. Click ‘Add exclusions’, then choose either campaign-level or ad-group-level exclusion.

  4. Navigate to Browse > How they have interacted with your business and select ‘Lunio Invalid Users’.

  5. Click Save.

Your Google Ads campaigns are now protected from invalid users detected by Lunio!
