Key Points:
Before You Start
To enable Google Ads Audience Protection, ensure the following prerequisites are met:
Lunio Multiplatform Tracking Script Installed: Your website must have the Lunio multiplatform tracking script integrated. You can follow the installation guide here.
Supported Tracking Parameter: Lunio requires a supported tracking parameter to determine traffic sources, check whether your current tracking meets requirements here.
Google Platform Created in Your Workspace: You need to have created a Google Platform within your Lunio workspace. You can follow the setup guide here.
💡 Keep in mind that the initial tag activation may require a 24-hour wait period. Also, please note that exclusions will only take effect after your audience has reached a minimum size of 1,000 users.
Setup Guide
Creating Your Conversion Action:
1. Within your Google Ads account at the MCC level, go to Goals > Conversions > Summary > Create Conversion Action > Website
2. Click on Add URL and input the URL for the website you want to measure conversions and click Scan. A pop-up may appear to confirm the URL. Click Apply on the correct URL to continue the scan.
3. Once scanned, click on Save and Continue.
4. Next select Page View for the category of the conversion action. You may need to click on see all to see the option.
5. Add conversion actions. This will prompt you to select an action; in this case select the Web option.
6. Set up manually using code and apply the following settings.
Conversion action optimisation options: Secondary action not used for bidding optimisation.
Selecting "Secondary action" is crucial to avoid impacting your Google Ads, as it won't be utilised in conversion reporting or automated bidding algorithms. This option is essential to prevent attracting additional invalid users to the website through Google AI.
Important Note: This option will be disabled if you haven't previously had conversions of the "Page View" type. If this is the case, initially create a conversion with any settings using the "Primary action used for bidding optimization" option. Save the conversion action, and only then proceed to step 1 of creating a conversion action with the desired settings.
Conversion name = Lunio Invalid User
Value = Don't use a value
Count = Every (by default)
Click-through conversion window = 30 days
Engaged-view conversion window = 3 days (by default)
View-through conversion window = 1 day (by default)
Attribution model = Last Click
4. Click Done and Save and continue.
5. To capture the code, click on see event snippet
Note: please ensure that you copy the complete event snippet for forwarding to us, as this step is crucial for Lunio to effectively populate the audience
6. Finalise the process by clicking "Finish" and then "Done." Your conversion action is now complete.
Creating the Audience
To create an audience of users who triggered your conversion action:
Navigate to Tools > Shared Library > Audience Manager > Segments > Your data segments.
Click on the blue '+' icon in the top left and choose '+Website Visitors.'
Complete the new audience segment details as follows:
Segment name = Lunio Invalid Users
Customer Type (optional) = Leave as blank
Segment members = Visitors of a page with specific tags > Lunio Invalid Users
Membership duration = We recommend 540 days as standard
Description = Invalid users detected by Lunio
4. Next you will need to grant access to the audience of the child accounts. Navigate to the MCC Main Page, then select Accounts from the left menu, followed by Sub-account settings.
5. Then you want to locate the accounts in the list to which you wish to provide access to audiences. Choose the Audience Manager account and select the MCC name.
6. In a timeframe spanning from 12 to 24 hours, audiences from the MCC account will become visible in your child account.
Applying the Audience to Your Campaigns
Audiences can only be applied at a client account level, not at the MCC level. To protect your campaigns from invalid users, apply the audience as an exclusion at your client account level:
Go to the client account level for the campaigns you want to protect.
Go to ‘Audiences’ on the left under Audiences, Keywords, and Content.
Click 'Edit exclusions’, then choose either campaign-level or ad-group-level exclusion.
Navigate to Browse > How they have interacted with your business > Website Visitors and select ‘Lunio Invalid Users’ (this is the audience you created following the steps above)
Click Save.
Your Google Ads campaigns are now protected from invalid users detected by Lunio!
