How to Set Up Meta with Lunio

Add Meta as a platform in Lunio, configure your URL tracking so Lunio can identify your Meta clicks, and optionally enable audience protection to exclude invalid users from your ads.

Before You Start

You will need to have Lunio's multiplatform tracking script installed on your website before Meta traffic can be monitored. If you have not done this yet, follow the instructions in Installing Lunio's Multiplatform Tracking Script.

You will also need administrator access to your Lunio dashboard and access to your Meta Ads Manager account with permission to edit ads.

⚠️ If you are setting up a new platform for the first time, it can take up to 24 hours for the tag to activate and for data to start appearing.

Step 1) Add Meta as a Platform in Lunio

Log into your Lunio dashboard as an administrator and click the Settings (gear) icon in the top right navigation bar to open System Settings.

From there, go to Platforms → Multi Platform → Add New Mplat +.

Fill in the fields as follows:

  • Select Platform = Meta

  • Name = a name that matches your workspace, so it is easy to identify later

  • Average Cost Per Click = enter a CPC manually or select Auto Calculate to let Lunio work it out for you. If you choose auto calculate, at least one other platform outside of Google in your account must already have a manually defined CPC

  • Protection Status = set to Protect if you plan to enable audience protection, or Monitor if you only want to track invalid clicks for now

  • Add Domains to This Platform = the domains linked to your website, including any subdomains. Copy the full URL from your browser to make sure the domain is complete (for example, https://www.example.com)

Once everything is filled in, click Confirm.

💡 If you have more than one website to protect, we recommend setting each one up as a separate platform configuration so you can track them in separate workspaces later.

Step 2) Assign the Meta Platform to a Workspace

Now that the platform has been created, you need to assign it to a workspace so the data appears on your dashboard.

  1. Go to Settings and select Workspaces.

  2. Click the pencil icon next to the workspace where you want to add Meta.

  3. Go to the Multi Platform tab and click Add Configurations.

4. Find the Meta platform you just created in the side panel and click the + button to add it to the workspace.

A confirmation notification will appear once the platform has been assigned. If you need more detail on managing workspaces, see How to add a platform outside of Google to a workspace.

Step 3) Configure URL Tracking in Meta

Lunio needs to identify which clicks come from Meta, which it does by reading a parameter in your ad URLs. The most reliable way to do this is to tag your ads with Lunio's own parameter, as it removes any ambiguity about whether a click came from a paid Meta ad.

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, go to your Ads tab and select the ads you want to tag.

  2. Click Edit, then scroll to the Tracking section and add ppcp_platform=meta to the URL parameters field.

If you would rather add it directly to your landing page URL, scroll to the Destinations section instead, so a URL of https://www.example.com becomes https://www.example.com?ppcp_platform=meta. Where your URL already contains parameters, add Lunio's parameter to the end using an ampersand, for example https://www.example.com?utm_campaign=spring&ppcp_platform=meta.

2. Click Apply to save your changes.

If you have several ads to update, you can select them all from the campaign view and click the edit icon to apply the same parameter across them at once, which works in the same way as editing a single ad.

💡 If you already tag your Meta ads with UTMs and would prefer not to add another parameter, Lunio can identify Meta traffic from your UTMs instead, as long as utm_source contains facebook, instagram, meta or whatsapp and utm_medium contains one of cpc, ppc, paid, cpm, display or pmax.

Both are needed, so utm_source on its own will not be enough for Lunio to recognise the click as paid. We still recommend ppcp_platform where possible, as UTMs are not always applied consistently across campaigns and can result in paid clicks being missed.

Step 4) Verify Clicks Are Appearing

Allow up to 24 hours for data to begin flowing, then check your Lunio dashboard to confirm that Meta clicks are showing. Select the workspace you assigned the platform to and look for Meta traffic in the overview.

If no data appears after 24 hours, check that the multiplatform tracking script is installed correctly and that your URL parameter is in place.

Your Meta setup is now complete, so you can optionally enable audience protection below to start excluding invalid users from your ads. If you would also like campaign, ad set and ad level reporting for Meta, see Advanced Reporting with Meta.

Enabling Audience Protection (Optional)

The steps above give you full visibility of invalid Meta traffic on your dashboard. If you also want Lunio to automatically exclude invalid users from seeing your Meta ads, you can set up audience protection by following the steps below.

Your Protection Status must be set to Protect in your platform configuration for exclusions to take effect, so if you selected Monitor when setting your platform up you will need to change it before continuing.

⚠️ Audience exclusions will only be applied once your audience reaches a minimum size of 100 users, so exclusions will not take effect until that threshold is met.

💡 If your website has more than one Pixel ID, let your account manager or [email protected] know so protection can be enabled correctly, and make sure the Lunio event is active on each pixel so you can create the audience on all of them.

Step 1) Create the Exclusion Audience in Meta

The Lunio event needs to appear in your Meta account before you can create the audience, which can take up to 24 hours after your platform has been set up, so if you cannot see it yet please wait and check again.

Once the event is available, go to All tools → Audiences → Create Audience, then choose Custom Audience and select Website Traffic.

Set up the audience with the following values:

  • Include people who meet = ANY of the following criteria

  • Source = the relevant Pixel

  • Events = Lunio

  • Retention = 180 days

  • Audience name = a clear name such as Lunio Invalid Users

Click Create Audience to save it.

💡 If the Lunio event is not listed, your administrator will need to verify the event in your Meta Events Manager before it becomes available.

Step 2) Apply the Exclusion Audience to Your Ad Sets

You will need to apply the audience to each ad set you want to protect, and the steps differ slightly depending on the campaign type.

Standard campaigns

  1. Go to All tools → Ads Manager → Campaign → Ad Set and click Edit.

  2. Find Audience and select Exclude.

  3. Choose Exclude people who are in at least ONE of the following.

  4. Apply the audience you created above.

  5. Click Publish.

Advantage+ campaigns

These steps apply to Advantage+ sales, Advantage+ leads and Advantage+ app campaigns.

  1. Go to All tools → Ads Manager → Campaign → Ad Set and click Edit.

  2. Find Audience and click Show More Controls.

  3. Choose Custom Audience Exclusions and select the audience you created above in the Website field.

  4. Click Publish.

Step 3) Verify the Audience Is Active

After a few days of traffic, go to All tools → Audiences in Meta and check that your Lunio Invalid Users audience is populating, as the audience size will grow as Lunio detects invalid users.

Keep in mind that the number of users in the audience may not match the number of invalid clicks on your Lunio dashboard exactly, as Meta counts users based on browser IDs while Lunio counts clicks based on IP addresses, so a single invalid user can generate multiple clicks.

If you run into any issues, please reach out to your account manager and they'll be happy to help!
