Before You Start
You will need access to your Google Ads account with permission to edit URL options, along with your Lunio tracking template, which you can find on the Tracking Codes page under Integrations in your Lunio Settings.
Which method should you follow?
The steps you follow depend on how your existing tracking template is built, so start by opening it in Google Ads and looking at the very beginning of it. If it starts with {lpurl}, follow Method A. If it starts with anything else, follow Method B.
⚠️ Using SA360? An SA360 template does not start with {lpurl}, so it can look like a Method B setup, but it needs to be handled its own way. Skip Methods A and B and follow Method C instead.
Method A: Your template starts with {lpurl}
Copy your Lunio template from the Tracking Codes page, which will look similar to the example below.
In your existing template, remove
{lpurl}and the?that follows it, and if there is an ampersand (&) after{lpurl}, remove that too, so you are left with just the tracking parameters.Paste the Lunio template into the main Tracking template field so that Lunio now handles the click first.
Paste your existing tracking parameters into the Final URL suffix field, which is where they will continue to run alongside Lunio.
If you already have something in the Final URL suffix field, join your existing parameters onto the end of it with an ampersand (&) rather than overwriting it, so nothing you had before is lost.
Google Ads lets you apply URL options at account, campaign or ad group level, where account is the broadest and ad group the most specific. Look at which level your existing tracking template sits at and which level your existing Final URL suffix sits at, then add your parameters at whichever of those two is more specific, as Google always applies the most specific setting.
💡 HubSpot works at campaign level. Connecting HubSpot adds its own template automatically at account level, but you make these edits in each campaign's Campaign URL Options instead, repeating Method A for every campaign as each one differs. A tracking customised warning may appear in HubSpot afterwards, which only confirms the edit and is nothing to worry about.
💡 Triple Whale works at ad group level, so you apply Method A in each ad group's URL options rather than at account level, repeating it for every ad group you want Lunio to protect.
Method B: Your template starts with something else
Copy your Lunio template from the Tracking Codes page.
Remove the
{lpurl}portion from the front of the Lunio template.Add your existing tracking onto the end of the Lunio template, immediately after
&url=, so it sits inside the Lunio template and runs once the click has passed through Lunio.
Method C: You use SA360
Open SA360 and use the navigation bar at the top to go to the engine account you want to add tracking to.
Find your existing tracking template, which usually sits at account level under Settings in the left hand menu, then Account Settings followed by Tracking. You are looking for a template that starts with
https://ad.doubleclick.net/and ends with{unescapedlpurl}.In Lunio, go to System Settings, then Integrations, then Tracking Codes.
Untick the Encode final URLs? setting, which changes the template to a version ending in
{unescapedlpurl}, then copy it.Replace your existing SA360 tracking code with the Lunio one and click save. When you refresh the page, SA360 will have automatically added its own required elements to the start of the template, which is how the two merge.
💡 Your template may vanish after saving, which is normal. Once the Lunio template is saved and merged with the DoubleClick template, it may no longer show in the tracking template field, as SA360 hides merged or inherited templates. Your Lunio tracking is still active, and you can confirm it using the Test URL preview.

Verify your setup
Once you have saved your changes, confirm everything is working by opening the Tracking Codes page in Lunio and clicking the test button, which checks that Lunio can read your live ads correctly. If the test flags anything, our guide on tracking template errors explains what each message means and how to fix it.
